Only 32 km from Valladolid you can find Balan Kanché, also known as “The Cave of the Mayan Treasures”. In this cave with stalactites and stalagmites, visitors can go deep and enjoy the light and sound effects in the route. In the center of the vault, you can admire an impressive stalactite connected to the floor that looks like the trunk of a robust tree, and in which base you can see endless ceremonial pieces of great archaeological value.
Cenote is a term that is only used in Mexico and comes from the Mayan word “dzonot”, which means “abyss”; cenotes are wells of fresh water formed by the erosion of the soft and porous limestone, but for the Mayan world they were sources of life that provided with water, besides being the door to the wonders of other world (xib’alb’a).
In and near Valladolid (besides being abundant in Riviera Maya, which covers an extensive zone between Yucatan and Quintana Roo) there are options to venture and visit these impressive rock water formations. You can visit Dzitnup or X'keken the Sacred Cenote of Chichén Itzá and the Xtoloc Cenote, among others.
